Week 11 & 12 Branding Collateral Development

Wed 18 May 2011

Textile Header

First time using In Design, with the template provided it was pretty easy. Tip of the day - View, screen performance - high resolution - otherwise your images look blurry.

I wanted my header quite moody so it was versatile enough to go with my Rick Owens menswear or dress body couture pieces. I played with images in Photoshop and created layers of textures and gradients, combining black grey and white tones. These colours are profound in my menswear and dbc, and also my cadence emery label.

Layout needed to be clean and crisp. Esp white label and logo on a black background.

Week 10 Branding Collateral Development

Week 10
Printing

In the press ready files, I used crop marks to trim with. I left a safe bleed of 5mm around. My experience was okay. I chose a textured paper stock for my letterhead, invoice and envelope 90gsm. It had a subtle stripe groove. I also used this on my garment care swing tags. 176gsm. I also used 300gm smooth textured card for the front swing tag and last price tag (dark grey). I used the same card for the business cards and printed grey as well. I submitted all 3 versions because I like the idea that the logo is versatile.

The stickers turned out really well, I submitted them on the imagined packaging and also within my collective branding document package.

The giveaway product was printed onto transfer paper and printed onto a calico tote. This is something that both males and females can use and promotes the brand. I felt even in the larger scale, the logo had a strong sense of integrity.

Overall, I am happy with the development of the brand and the logotype and feel that it can be applied really well into a variety of different applications and uses.

Template for document presentation:

This is the kind of template I used. Black 220gsm card stock. Had slits in the fold over to hold business card and swing tag top layer. On the inside I make a folded business card holder and attached it to the folder with a removable velcro patch (you can take this off and stick it back on Amy! :) - to see all the other business cards). I also had a pocket for the swing tags and stickers. This stationary pack and the paper bags with stickers were submitted inside free giveaway product - calico tote.

Week 10 Branding Collateral Development

Week 10
Swing Tags

For my swing tags I wanted to do something that had a few layers/elements. I looked at some swing tags on some garments in shops and many expensive designer pieces do this, especially to give warnings about garment care and delicate fibres.
Because my label is for him and for her, on the first swing tag I will just incorporate the typography and have 'for him' or 'for her' on there as well. Garment care swing tags will follow, especially for delicate items. The last one will be the price tag - double sided, with the realised logotype that incorporates the iconography and typography on one side, and on the other side the price and style information.

Week 8 & 9 Branding Collateral Development

Holidays Week 8 & 9
Business Cards, Product Packaging, Giveaway
Print testing etc.

BUSINESS CARDS

For the assignment submission I prepared 3 different variations of the business card in two colours as a press ready file. I printed all 3 and will submit. I thought it would be interesting to play with it a little and have them on different grounds with slight variations. The overall representation and feel was the same for each layout but it was an experiment to see how strong the logo would stand in different layout contexts. I felt they all worked well on screen. I shall see how they print up come time to print. Not sure if I will use all or just one layout type.
To note also, I think the logo is really strong as white on black ground.

GARMENT LABELLING
From before, when I was experimenting with the logotype in different ways according to application, I decided to stick with doing some garment labelling with just the iconography and some with just the typography, and some with both. I like the way that my logotype works well in both black and white grounds and also in different scales, layouts. This is going to work well being a designer, when it comes to things such as smaller garment tabs, embroidered patches, and actual labels etc.

PRODUCT PACKAGING

For my product packaging, I wanted to keep it simple. My bags will be simple paper bags and dust bags. In this case, I needed something to just protect and seal. I did not want branding all over the bags screaming the labels name. I wanted to keep it small subtle and clean.
For this reason, I looked at doing a tissue wrap, black with just the typography running diagonally across. I thought that the outlined letters and block letters gave a nice highlight across the material.

I also used the logo symbol and typography separately as stickers. These would be to use on bags given to clients and customers. I will do an example of this in the submission.

PRODUCT GIVEAWAY

Week 8 Branding Collateral Development

Week Eight
Research and development into stationary

My invoice will be a mock up for a few PR samples. I will Look at incorporating the logo on the invoice as well, but keep it simple.

INVOICE

For my invoice, I avoided the lines within the table. I wanted it to be simple and retain the negative space, I felt it looked cleaner. Logo is top right hand corner and contact details below. I used Two Hands  Public Relations Agency as the contact I was doing a mock up with.

LETTERHEAD

Same thing for my letterhead, I used the same PR company to keep everything neat. Logotype top left hand corner and contact details underneath. For this, I stretched it a bit as it started to look a bit blocky along the left margin of the page.

ENVELOPE

For the envelope I just wanted to maintain a standard business DL Envelope size. 22 x 11. I felt it was most professional

Week 7 Branding Collateral Development

Week Seven
Logo Development

Going back to the idea of the simple clean square lines, I needed to create something that guys were comfortable wearing but girls could also wear. It had to be relatively genderless.

This is what I came up with next. It incorporates black and white, fill and unfill. There are no real exceptionally feminine or masculine elements. I felt that the fill and unfill approach of the symbol and the typography, especially in reverse on either side gave the overall logo a genderless nature. Ie. Both female s and males could wear it proudly without feeling as if it was lending itself more to the opposite sex.

Variety of applications of same logotype, depending on what it is being used on. The beauty is, as with any logo, it can be applied both ways or together. I feel it is a strong enough representation of the label either way.

Different variations for garment labelling, business cards, swing tags etc. Personally I like initial design the best and feedback from other people was the same. This design is the bottom left above and it combines the symbol and the text together.

Week 6 Branding Collateral Development

Week 6
Logo Development

This Logo is bold and recognisable from afar. I feel that the simplicity and strong lines provide iconography that could potentially stand the test of time.
Amy had a look and thought it was a bit safe. She said to definitely use the text in there somewhere and look at tweaking the symbol within the logo.

The other logotypes I had worked on had more of a hand drawn feel. They are a bit more expressive. This first one had two blocked in areas that stand out. Amy said to look at something like this, also maybe a clean circle shape that is easy recognisable to the eye.

This one is not bold enough.

This one gets lost from a far.

I then worked with the first hand drawn design and refined the lines and kept the bounding in a perfect circle. The name would then be placed in here.

I used the clipping mask and pathfinder shape tool to get a gap in the middle

Because my label is marketed at a male and female target market, I showed this logo to some males who gave me feedback explaining that they felt it was a bit feminine. I showed them the previous designs and they all said that the first square one was more masculine and they would be more comfortable to wear it as a guy. They would wear it prouder and not feel like they were wearing a girls brand.
